As a kid I lacked an extreme amount of confidence.
At my heaviest I weighed 380lbs...
Needless to say, I didn't have a great social life.
Whether it was the confidence around friends, confidence about how I looked, or confidence in my ability to even climb the stairs without getting winded, it was nonexistent.
For me, and for a lot of our clients, confidence is one of those undervalued benefits of strength training.
Sure strength training has some physical benefits...
Losing body fat, increasing lean muscle, etc...
But I think the best benefit of strength training is the confidence you gain.
The confidence that you no longer need help carrying in the groceries.
The confidence to walk around the beach in your bathing suit and not give a crap about what other people think.
The confidence inside of you to truly love yourself for who you are.
I may be biased, but strength training truly changed my life.
It was the kick start to my 100+ pound weight loss journey, it was what got me into the field of changing lives, but most importantly it gave me confidence.
Every day I have the distinct pleasure of hearing from clients...
"I didn't have to ask my husband to carry the ladder for me."
"I can finally carry the 50lb bag of dog food by myself."
"I finally feel comfortable again in my own skin."
I'm not naive to think that is 100% related to strength training.
Heck, we do a lot more at Spurling than just lift heavy weights.
Not to mention, all their hard work outside of the gym on nutrition, mindset, etc.
However, I'm confident that strength training played a large role in it.
Sometimes it's not about the smaller pant sizes, the drop in body fat, or how many grams of protein you had today.
Sometimes it's just about being confident and happy with who you are.
Right?

Doug Spurling
