WELCOME TO SPURLING FITNESS

JOSH WILLIAMS

CSCS, NSCA-CPT

Co Owner | Coach | Fitness Sherpa

Josh Williams is the owner of Spurling Fitness, where he leads the coaching team, oversees training standards, and helps guide the long-term vision of the business. With over a decade in the industry, Josh’s focus is simple: build strong, capable humans and create a gym experience where people feel supported, challenged, and proud of what they’re accomplishing.

Originally from Southwest Harbor, Maine, Josh is a lifelong Mainer who values hard work, community, and showing up consistently—principles that shape how Spurling Fitness operates today. He attended the University of New England, where he earned his degree in Exercise Science and first discovered Spurling Fitness through an internship. What started as a learning opportunity quickly turned into a career. After graduating in 2013, Josh joined the team full-time and has since purchased the company and become the owner as of 2024.

Josh is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and Certified Personal Trainer (NSCA-CPT) through the National Strength & Conditioning Association. His background includes working with high school athletes, collaborating with physical therapists and strength coaches, assisting with clinical exercise testing, and serving as an inter-professional health peer teacher at UNE. This diverse experience shaped his belief that great coaching is about more than workouts—it’s about education, communication, and meeting people where they are.

Today, Josh is passionate about helping adults train for longevity, confidence, and real life. Whether someone’s goal is to move without pain, get stronger, keep up with their kids, or feel at home in their own body again, Josh believes fitness should be challenging, approachable, and sustainable. He often refers to himself as a “Fitness Sherpa”—someone who helps guide people through the process, rather than pushing them blindly up the mountain.

Outside the gym, Josh enjoys spending time with his wife and daughters, training for endurance events, lifting heavy things, hiking Maine’s trails, and continuing to learn—because great coaches never stop being students.

JUDY STARK

Judy is originally from CT, where she attended Quinnipiac University and graduated with degrees in Laboratory Medicine and Microbiology. She has witnessed what ill health looks like in humans while working large teaching hospitals. This is when Health and Wellness became a passion of hers. Basically, she likes to MOVE and eat healthy foods, and inspire others to do so as well.

She began teaching Group Dance Fitness in the 90’s, when there was no formal training programs, a trail blazer of sorts. Drawing from years of training in Gymnastics and Dance, she created an hour long fitness class to teach. She became certified with American Fitness Association of America(AFAA) as a Group Fitness Instructor in 1998. She moved to Maine in 1999, and worked at York Hospital, running the Transfusion Medicine Department and teaching fitness classes in the evenings. Through the years, she certified and taught numerous fitness formats at numerous locations in Southern Maine.

She joined Spurling Fitness as a member during a month off from her old job and never left! She loves it here and all of the inspirational (and FUN) Coaches. When a PT Coach position became available, she quickly applied. Judy loves new challenges and learning, and is very thrilled to be coaching.

Other hobbies include, leading Community movement/music events as one of the founding members as “The Funky Bunks”. You might catch her dancing in the streets or popping up at Halloween as a Zombie leading “Thriller”or at The Dance Mile in Portland. She loves to cook and eat natural foods. She creates healthy, easy, delicious dishes on weekends. What goes in the body is extremely important for good health.

Her fitness philosophy is simple. Each week find time to do some Cardio, Strength, Balance and flexibility moves and eat food that looks like it came from the Earth.

Spurling is a comfortable place for anyone to reach their fitness goals. It is a great community of people, who care about each other and giving back to the Community. She is proud to say she is a part of it.

MAKENNA ROY

Makenna joins us as the Assistant Director of Client Experience. She is currently attending York County Community College as an undergraduate majoring in Business Administration. She has always had a passion for athletics ever since she picked up playing lacrosse as a little one. The gears in her brain began to turn when she joined Massabesic’s girls varsity lacrosse team and found a passion in lifting weights and running. She soon found herself reading books and listening to podcasts on how nutrition and active lifestyles can greatly impact your life. Makenna’s dream is to one day share her passion by helping others in her own gym.

Makenna joined Spurling as a client in 2020, her junior year of high school, and fell in love with the people and the environment. Especially considering she was new to the gym, she had never felt more comfortable in any workout environment before. Once the job opportunity opened up here, it was a no brainer for her to apply. She is so excited to start taking her fitness journey and turning into a career here with Spurling.

Outside of work and school, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, snowboarding in the winter, and trying out new foods! Do not be shocked if you ever see her at a Dunkin or Starbucks drive-thru, she LOVES coffee!

MIKE DALY

Mike is originally from the United Kingdom, Mike attended the University of Greenwich, London. He played competitive soccer throughout his youth and was later signed to a professional soccer team. In the mid 2000‘s, he moved to Los Angeles to work in the film industry with his father. He ended up meeting his future wife there and began permanently calling the U.S. “home.”

With his athletic background, the decision to transition to the fitness industry was a natural one. While taking courses at UCLA, he was chosen for an internship at Velocity Sports Performance in Redondo Beach, CA, where he gained experience working with a wide range of middle school, high school and college athletes. In 2010, Mike moved to New England (because he loved the idea of shoveling snow), had a couple of kids, and continued his fitness career, working as a personal trainer and strength coach at various facilities on the Seacoast.

Mike lives in Kittery, with his wife and two young sons. Outside of work, he likes to play soccer with his 11-year old and basketball (badly), with his 7-year old. If the has any other free time, you can find Mike chauffeuring his sons to their various games and practices.

BRYAN FLEWELLING

Bryan was born and raised in upstate New York; attended college in Chicago, Illinois where he received a B.A. in Philosophy. He then moved to the North Shore of Boston and completed his Master’s Degree. He then moved to Southern Maine and has been here for the last 20 years. He currently lives in Cape Porpoise.

Prior to the pandemic he was a certified Sommelier (wine taster) and the Wine Director for three restaurants in Portland (Hugo’s, Eventide Oyster Company & The HoneyPaw) and was the wine writer for the Portland Press Herald. When the hospitality industry shuttered its doors, he pivoted and, after completing the requisite certifications, began a private practice as life coach.

He coaches couples and individuals to navigate the changing tides of their lives (bryanflewelling.com). He is also a Certified Integral Facilitator and Enneagram practitioner.

About a year and a half ago he decided (like many of you!) to start piloting the ship of his bodily health and connected with Spurling. He loved the community and culture of Spurling so much that when an opportunity became available to take a deeper dive into the coaching world, he jumped right in! He continues to learn the mechanics of strength training and is enjoying getting to know more people in the community.

He has four children, two boys and two girls. You may have seen his daughters, Seraphina and Aurora, sitting near the water fountain while he (tried?) to get a workout in. His wife, Lauren Tenney, is frequently at an earlier morning Strong. Outside of work you’ll find him telling stories to his daughters, playing a little guitar and cooking. And, when time permits, he squeezes in some reading.

Nick Bryan

I’ve always had a deep passion for personal health and wellness, with fitness being a cornerstone of that journey.

I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Applied Exercise Science from the University of New England and hold my Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) credential through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). During my time at UNE, I worked closely with varsity athletic teams, helping run their strength programs and supporting their continued development.

I also trained personal clients and led both group classes and one-on-one sessions at Primal Fit gym. I’m excited to bring my experience and energy to help you reach your fitness goals—let’s get after it!

Ayo Oni

Hi, my name is Ayo. I’m a Georgia native who moved to Maine about a year ago, and I’ve always had a deep passion for exercise, health, and helping people feel their best. My background in sports and years as an avid gym-goer gave me hands-on experience with strength training, mobility work, and building smart, sustainable fitness habits.

I’m a certified personal trainer, and over the years I’ve helped clients improve their form, increase their strength, and build confidence in the gym. That experience sparked my interest in coaching and cemented my desire to work with people.

I’m also currently studying Nutrition, which allows me to bring a well-rounded approach to health and fitness, connecting what happens in your workouts with what fuels your body outside of them.

I’m excited to be part of the Spurling team and to work with a community that values progress at every level. I’m here to support you, encourage you, and help you reach your goals. I’m looking forward to meeting you, learning from the team, and helping clients feel stronger and healthier.

ARIE EITEN

I’m a graduate from the University of Southern Maine with a degree in Exercise Science
and a minor in psychology as well as a Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) through the
National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

My interest in exercise and fitness originated from a love of science and a passion for
helping others, with my first exposure to exercise and coaching being within the dance
world at Maine State Ballet. Now a principal dancer with the Maine State Ballet
company, I spend a lot of my free time rehearsing and preparing for upcoming ballet
performances. Cross-training and lifting in the gym has helped me stay active and
achieve my goals on and off the stage. When I’m not in the gym, you can find me
practicing or performing in ballet productions, fishing and being outside, or following the
Red Sox!

Fitness and exercise are really wonderful because they allow you to achieve goals you
sometimes wouldn’t think are attainable and allow you to continue to do the things you
love to do. I believe the more actively well-rounded a person is in their training, the
healthier they will be. I’ve worked with a wide age range of individuals and really enjoy
working with people of all ages. I value creating a supportive and relaxed environment
where clients can be themselves. My greatest goal in training is to help others become
the healthiest, happiest, and most active versions of themselves!

JOSEPH DAVENPORT

I’m a coach who believes movement is a doorway to confidence, resilience, and unlocking the strength people don’t always see in themselves. The foundation of who I am was built over 21 years of service in the U.S. Army, where I served as a 92Y Supply Specialist, a Drill Instructor, and later as an H2F (Holistic Health and Fitness) Integrator. Those experiences shaped my leadership, discipline, and ability to motivate others through challenge and growth. They taught me how to bring structure when it’s needed, encouragement when it matters most, and an unwavering belief that people can go further than they think.

My journey deepened through Mixed Martial Arts, where I learned to understand movement, power, balance, and mental toughness on a whole different level. MMA reinforced my belief that progress is built through consistency and that strength is as much a mindset as it is a physical quality. It gave me a more detailed eye for mechanics and an appreciation for what the human body — and spirit — can overcome.

Today, I bring all of that experience into my work as a movement-focused coach. With a bachelor’s in athletic training and a background in rehabilitation support, and corrective exercise, I take a hands-on, detailed, and supportive approach to helping people move better and feel more confident. I love breaking down movement, guiding people through setbacks, and watching them discover their capability piece by piece.

My mission is simple: to help people rise, to move with confidence, think with strength, and build the kind of resilience that transforms their life inside and outside the gym. Coaching isn’t just my profession; it’s my passion, my purpose, and the work I’m proud to bring into every person I support.
