When we sit down with someone on day one they usually have a list of goals like...
Lose Weight.
Get Stronger.
Feel Healthier.
Have More Energy.
etc..
The goals vary based on who the person is but the one goal that everyone always mentions is...
Accountability.
People want to be held more accountable to getting it done.
So with that...
Here are my 3 biggest keys to staying accountable...
1. Get Help.
You can't do it on your own. You've tried that. How'd that work out for you?
Whether it's getting a team of coaches (like here at Spurling), hiring a mentor, or finding a highly accountable buddy to pull you along.
Fitness needs to be individualized in its approach, but it shouldn't be done individually.
Meaning, working out on your own is boring.
When you get bored you stop.
The people that see the best results in anything (fitness, business, financials, etc) always have help.
Get someone that is going to call you if you didn't show...
Someone that is going to push you to do more than you thought you could...
Someone to get you through the rough times.
The best piece of advice I can give on accountability is to get some help.
Accountability is a team sport, not an individual one.
2. Write It Down
It literally stresses me out that there are people in this world that don't use a daily planner.
Now, that sounds extreme, but I just know how much stuff gets done when it gets written down.
There are a couple important things to remember when you write things down...
Focus on the rocks, not the sand and the pebbles.
Get the big stuff down first, and make it a higher priority, compared to the little sand and pebbles stuff.
For example, the rocks may be appointments that can't be moved, a project that needs to get done, and your workout :)
I always strive for 3 big rocks every day. Three things that must get done, ideally first thing in the day, before anything else gets in the way.
However you look at it, productivity just like when we talk goal setting, the succproductivitywhen things are written down is 10x that of a day when things are not written down.
3. Pretend You're Being Filmed
I love this one.
I read it in an article and it just stuck with me.
What if everyday someone was filming your every move?
You're the director of your own movie and it's going to be plaed in every theatre across America?
You'd want to make a good movie, right?
Gone would be the hours of refreshing your Facebook feed or wasting time surfing the web..
That doesn't make for an exciting movie..
However, showing you complete big projects, making an impact at your job, taking care of yourself, and enoying family time would all make great scenes in a movie.
Pretend you are being filedm every day, and all of the sudden the things you do, the choices you make, and the things you say instantly improve.
Staying accountable is hard. No doubt about it.
Hopefully these tips can help you stay more accountable on your journey of 1% better.
Dedicated to Your Success,
Doug Spurling
